Personally, I'll wait for Snopes' take. Apparently, Yahoo News tends to take stories from The Weekly World News for the funny news section but doesn't mention that fact.

I just can't get the image of the mouse running back to the house leaving a DeLorean style flaming trail behind him with the old Speedy Gonzales "Arriba arriba, undele..."

*wipes tears*

It also is on a bunch of other webistes, such as the Chicago Tribune website. They attribute it to the Tribune news services.

Or maybe it, y'know, ran into the first place that seemed like a good idea, mainly the place where it knows where it can hide, and that place also happened to be flammable...

From reading about similar stories on Snopes I get the impression that the newspapers all quote each other with very little fact checking, so if one got it wrong the rest will scurry to repeat the mistake.
The theme of the story is nicely covered here.
Incidentally the story is listed in the Daily Snopes.

On yet another station (ToSeeked Doodler by over 3 hours)

The way all the News stations just pick up the AP (word for word) it could be a false story. But I would hope somebody would have followed up to see if it were true.

And didn't go out by the time it reached the house. Or was he burning leaves on his porch? If not, it seems very coincidental for a mouse to find the door so quickly (especially while in diress)

Lot's of coincidences, but that's how disasters are made.

I figured the direction of travel was random and that even if it weren't burning actively, its hair was probably still smouldering. Most of the cigarette started brushfires were the result of a butt that had likely stopped burning and were simply embers on dry kindling. From what I gleaned from the reports, it wasn't the house itself that went off, but some kind of draperies that lit up in the ultradry conditions.

My image of a Back to the Future style flametrail is most likely the product of my sense of humor than any actual event that occurred.

Sounds like a very inventive way to explain your house burning down to the insurance company, (when you dropped a candle) if you ask me!!!

Or a stiff breeze blowing a burning leaf or two into the house and igniting? Frankly, this guy ought to be flogged for burning ANYTHING in the conditions that exist out there right now...

From the standpoint of how logical both articles are, they are fairly equal. And mine is even linked with astronomy... Sort of

OK, next time I'll try to find a better way to express that I'm not amused by a joke
